Slang

Post by JaneLove on Wed Dec 29, 2010 8:03 pm

There's a lot of people from a lot of different places here. It must get a bit confusing sometimes, when people say things that you've never heard and don't understand what they mean.

Do have a lot of slang particular to your area that you use often? Weird words that aren't in the dictionary?

Share! We have like an entire dialect here where I live.

In Australia we have quite a bit of slang.
Arvo : afternoon
Barbie : barbecue
Bathers : swimming costume
Bikkie : biscuit
Bloke : man
Chewie : chewing gum
Cockie : cockroach/cockatoo
Crook : sick, or badly made
Dag : a funny person
Fair dinkum : true, genuine

Okay, we have a lot ^__^ but we use mainly these (There is hell a lot more)

In Texas people say "ya'll" for "you all" (or "you guys" which is actually what I say Razz ). We also call all soft drinks coke.. Whether or not it's actually Coke brand. I can't really think of any other slang, though. We're boring Wink

We use 'lan'.
Example: Hadi lan!
It can be translated like "C'mon man!" But lan doesn't mean man. It's slang and u can't use it for people who you are not at least friends x)
Umm. 'Kaşar' is kind of a cheese but it is also used as slut in slang.
There's so many others but difficult to explain in English so yea =D

I often say "hadi lan" to people in Turkey to be annoying, even though I almost can't speak turkish.

Lately "suge når det skjer" has become popular, I say it alot. It means : "Sucks when that happens" xD
Fatte: Hard to explain actually. It's like "Understood" I think xD
Vld: Va liksom det.. it's an acronym(spelling???) It's hard to explain>_<
Cappis: Handicapp. People who are dysfunctional or something Razz
There are some other slang words that I don't remember atm because i'm doing my homework.

I live in a mountain ski town where there's a lot of "skate culture" like stuff.
-"skate" refers to skateboarding
-"Dude" is a common word... it basically means person - male of female
-"Yo" yes, we actually say that. Basically a greeting.
-Some words for "bad" are lame, weak, weaksauce (lol)
-"Rad" is a form of "radical" but it means cool.
-"Shred" refers to skiing and snowboarding... like you're going to tear up the snow. It's a good thing.
-"Poweder" or "pow" is a kind of light, fluffy snow.
-Another common word is "strugglebus" and I'm not joking. It refers to either having a hard time, or a person having a hard time. It's a weird word. XD

Good words to know are tricks like "gainer" and "cork" and terms commonly used on the slopes.

My mom has lived all over Finland so she has picked a lot of slangs on her way, some used in Savo, Turku, Helsinki etc. Well obviosly by listening to my mom i use lot of slang words aswell Smile Sometimes i need to explain people what i meant but usually it's fine.
